Obituary of EUGENE WELLONS ATKINS The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA) - October 21, 1996 Eugene Wellons Atkins, 88, of the 10400 block of Lottsford Road, died Oct. 19, 1996. He was born May 14, 1908 in Windsor, Va., where he was a resident for many years. He retired as office manager of the State Highway Department, Suffolk Office, in 1974 after 44 years. He was a member of Windsor Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, former superintendent of the Sunday School and a teacher. He remained active in his church work until ill health prevented his participation. He was a member of the Suffolk American Legion Post (NU)57 and a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Signal Corp. He saw action in the Normandy Invasion, followed by liaison work in the Battle of the Bulge and culminating with V.E. Day. He graduated in 1930 with a degree in business from VPI, where he was a member and officer of the Suffolk Club and a member of Tech's baseball and boxing teams. Survivors include his wife, Mary Hendricks Atkins; a daughter, Mary Jean Nouri of Bowie, Md.; and a grandson, Babak Nouri of Bowie. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert W. and Sallie S. Atkins of Windsor. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Harrell Funeral Home, Suffolk, by the Rev. James B. Crocker. Burial will be in Windsor Cemetery .
