Obituary of Mary Hendricks Atkins MARY HENDRICKS ATKINS Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - May 10, 2000 Mary Hendricks Atkins, teacher, church worker, and a longtime resident of Windsor, died May 7, 2000. Mrs. Atkins was born Aug. 15, 1909, to Charles and Hallie Hendricks of Alton, Va. After graduating from Turbeville High School, she attended Longwood College. At Longwood she was active in the YWCA, the Athletic Association, and the Cunningham Literary Society. She graduated in 1930 with a B.S. degree. Mrs. Atkins then began her longtime career in teaching. After teaching in Amherst County, she began teaching in Windsor in 1931. Marriage and family-life brought a brief interlude but in 1944, Mrs. Atkins resumed teaching the fifth grade at Windsor. In addition to teaching, she was very active in the Windsor Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher until ill health made that impossible. Mrs. Atkins retired from public school teaching in 1974 after 38 years of dedicated service. She was the widow of Eugene W. Atkins and is survived by her daughter, Mary Jean Nouri; and her grandson, Babak A. Nouri, both of Bowie, Md. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home by the Rev. T.A. Powell. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Windsor Cemetery .
