"Bob" Baker, born Oct. 20, 1924, in Portsmouth, the son of Richard L. and Dora A. Baker, died Jan. 28, 2004. Bob received his education in the Portsmouth public schools and Fork Union Military Academy. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a basic training instructor before serving in the Asian Theater and was honorably discharged in March 1946. Bob is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elaine R. Baker; a son, Dr. James W. Baker and his wife Barbara of Chesapeake; daughter, Betty Jo Bass and her husband Steven of Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren, Blair Baker, Catherine Baker, Kelly Riddell, Keri Riddell and Jason Bass; and a cousin, Evelyn Daughtrey of Suffolk. Bob was a 50-year member of Naval Lodge No. 100, Portsmouth and Khedive Temple AAONMS. He was also a member of Mount Horeb Royal Arch Chapter No. 11, Portsmouth Commandry No. 5 Knights Templar, Scottish Rite Valley of Portsmouth and the Royal Order of Jesters Norfolk Court No. 75. In addition, he was recently conferred the Honorary 33rd Degree of the Scottish Rite. Bob was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as worthy patron of Esther Chapter No. 37 in 1962-1963. In addition, he served on numerous committees for the Grand Chapter of Virginia and was elected to the Board of Governors of the Eastern Star Home of Virginia, then serving as president of the Board for four years. Bob was elected as worthy grand patron of Virginia for 1985-1986. In 1991, he was appointed to serve the unexpired term as right worthy grand sentinel and was elected as right worthy associate grand patron for the 1991-1994 Triennium. He was elected as most worthy grand patron for the 1994-1997 Triennium. Bob retired from the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co. of Virginia as a district manager with 39 years of service. He began his career with the telephone company as a lineman-installer in 1946 and retired in 1985 as district manager-company relations. He held various management positions in Culpeper, Norfolk and Richmond, Va., including an assignment with Bell Laboratories in Murray Hills, N.J. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Johns Episcopal Church, Portsmouth, by the Very Rev. Ronald Greiser and the Rev. James Short with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk. A service with Eastern Star rites will be held Friday at 6:30 p.m. in R.W. Baker and Co.
