Obituary of Benjamin Thomas Barnes BENJAMIN THOMAS BARNES Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Friday, August 28, 1998 Benjamin Thomas Barnes, chief petty officer, U.S.N., (Ret.), died Aug. 26, 1998. Born Sept. 2, 1917, in Southampton County, he was a son of the late S.M. and Mary Ivey Barnes. He was a veteran of W.W. II and was a Pearl Harbor survivor serving on the USS Reid. Mr. Barnes was a member of the Hunterdale United Church of Christ, the Nottoway Investment Club, and the Laymans Fellowship of the church. He was a former member of the Courtland Ruritan Club and the Delaware Hunt Club. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Martha Howell Barnes; one sister, Elsie B. Hilliard of Jackson, N.C.; two brothers, Samuel Barnes of Suffolk and James Barnes of Franklin; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Mae Drake and a brother, Walter Barnes. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Southampton Memorial Park by the Rev. Dr. Alan Campbell. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Hunterdale United Church, 741 Hunterdale Road, Franklin, Va. 23851. Wright Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
