Obituary of Joseph Herman Barnes JOSEPH H. BARNES Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - September 19, 1998 Joseph Herman Barnes, 71, a lifelong resident of Southampton County, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at his home. Born Aug. 20, 1927, he was the son of Robert Herman and Nellie Lowe Barnes. Joe was an avid and competitive sportsman, outdoorsman and farmer. He enjoyed competing in all types of outdoor activities and raced motorcycles, catamarans and go-carts. He won many trophies in competitive shooting, loved snow skiing and, most recently, taking motorcycle rides with his friends. He attended Corinth Friends Meeting, Ivor, as a young man and was currently a member of Ivor Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Edith Harris Barnes; two sons, David Eugene Barnes and Dennis Stuart Barnes and his wife, Sharon Parker Barnes, all of Ivor; a grandson, Wesley Parker Barnes; his mother, Nellie Lowe Barnes Knapp of Ivor; and two sisters, Kathleen Barnes Pulley of Fort Collins, Colo., and Ann Barnes Parks of Greensboro, N.C. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, by the Rev. Dr. Edwin Peebles. Burial will be in Ivor Cemetery . The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Ivor Volunteer Rescue Squad or to Ivor Baptist Church.
