Everett Barrett FRANKLIN - Mark Everett "Poss" Barrett, 80, retired plant manager for Birdsong Peanut Company, died Feb. 24, 2003 at his home. Born in Southampton County, he was a son of the late Mark Ernest and Lina Everett Barrett and was raised by his uncle and aunt, Thomas (Tom) and Effa Magette Barrett. Poss attended Randolph Macon College where he played baseball and played professional baseball with Franklin in The Virginia League. An Army Air Corps veteran, he flew 50 missions over Germany during World War II. Poss was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of Franklin Baptist Church. Survivors include his grandson, Mark E. Barrett III and wife Theresa of Franklin; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Bessie Vick Barrett, a son, Mark E. Barrett Jr. and two sisters, Thelma B. Whitley and Mabel B. Nelson. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Poplar Spring Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Ira D. Hudgins officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service. Wright Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
