Obituary of Billy Ray Batten BILLY RAY BATTEN Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Friday, June 14, 2002 Billy Ray Batten, 67, a resident of Beale Place Drive, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at his home after a long illness. He was born in Johnston County, N.C. July 2, 1934, the son of the late Johnny Jasper Batten and Annie Garner Batten Broadwell. He was a retired shipfitter's foreman at Newport News Shipbuilding, service from 1952 to 1993. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, a former deacon at Langley Baptist Church, Hampton, a member of the Army/Navy Lodge No. 306, AF&AM, Hampton, and was currently a member of Tucker Swamp Baptist Church, Zuni. Bill was a faithful and loving husband, father, brother and grandfather. He lived a life of integrity characterized by honesty, hard work and faith in Jesus Christ. He will be dearly missed by his family and a host of close friends. The family wishes to express their gratitude to everyone who gave their love and support during Bill's illness, especially to their neighbors, devoted friends, the pastoral staff and Tucker Swamp Baptist Church family, Berachah Church family, and the faculty and staff of Summit Christian Academy, Newport News. Thanks are extended to the exceptional doctors and staff of Obici Hospital and the hospice personnel who shared their skills and hearts with us. Mr. Batten is survived by his wife, Sue Parker Batten; a daughter, Tammy Batten Carpenter of Hampton; a brother, Tommy Batten of New Bern, N.C.; a sister, Joan Broadwell Bradshaw of Clover, S.C.; a stepbrother, Chuck Broadwell of Littleton, N.C.; and four grandchildren, Mandy Carpenter and Benjamin Bradon Carpenter of Hampton, and Zachariah Batten Pritt and LeAnna M. Pritt and their mother, Barbara Pritt Garrison of Hampton. He was the father of the late William Brock Batten and Yancy Scott Batten. A Service of Celebration will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Tucker Swamp Baptist Church. Pastor Steve Bradshaw will preside. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the Family Life Center of the church following the service.
