EUNICE BEATON KIRLES GROOME

GLOUCESTER - Also known in the late 1930s and 40s as "Miss Honey Lane,"
Eunice Beaton Groome passed away Monday night at Riverside Regional
Hospital in Newport News, Va. A resident at Walter Reed Convalescent
Center in Gloucester since October 2004, she succumbed to serious
injuries to her brain and fractured hip.
Mrs. Groome was born April 4, 1919, in Franklin, Va., to Eva Mae and
William C. Beaton and achieved notoriety as the "Song Bird of the South"
singing with several well-known big bands in Norfolk and Cincinnati
where she met and married Thomas L. Kirles Jr. of Raleigh, N.C. She was
a very active Christian teacher at Central Baptist Church and Central
Congregational Christian Church in Norfolk. Before relocating back to
Denver, Colo., in 1966, she worked as a legal secretary for the
Delamater Davis & Son Law Firm. In Denver, she was associated with
several companies before deciding to enter the social services field as
a senior companion with Seniors Inc. Upon retirement, Mrs. Groome
continued to be very active in Church Life and community until diagnosed
with Alzheimer's disease.
Returning to Virginia in September 2004 with her son, Tom and
daughter-in-law, Holly, she became a member of the Providence Baptist
Church of Hayes, Va. She will be remembered for her strong faith in
Jesus Christ and wonderful sense of humor and concern for others before
herself.
She is survived by her son, Thomas L. Kirles III; two sisters, Dorothy
Louise Olson and Jean Rose Olson, both of Denver, Colo.; two
grandchildren, Jeremy Thomas Kirles of Abilene, Texas, and Jennifer
Robin Kirles of Colorado Springs , Colo.
A funeral will be held today at 10 a.m. at Providence Baptist Church.
Interment will be 2:30 p.m. at Poplar Spring Cemetery , Franklin, Va.
The family received friends Wednesday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Hogg
Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
