The wreck occurred just before 4 p.m., about a half-mile east of the town, on the busy four-lane highway. A Ford Tempo in the right westbound lane suddenly cut across the highway into the right eastbound lane and struck an oncoming pickup truck nearly head on. Both drivers died. Trooper Ebersole said the driver of the Ford was Raymond L. Hill Jr., 63, of Petersburg. The driver of the pickup was identified as Paul W . Branch , 59, of Ivor. After hitting the pickup, the Ford then careened into the passenger side of an eastbound logging truck which had jackknifed as its driver, Thomas D. Rhodes, slammed on the brakes in an effort to avoid the wreck. Rhodes was unhurt, state police said. But Hill's wife, Patricia Hill, 59, was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital by the Nightingale helicopter ambulance. She was in serious condition. All three people were wearing seat belts. Traffic was detoured onto alternate routes around Waverly until the accident scene was cleared about 7:03 p.m. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
