Obituary of Luther Ashby Brantley LUTHER ASHBY BRANTLEY Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - April 15, 1999 Luther Ashby Brantley, 89, a lifelong resident of Southampton County, died April 13, 1999, at Southampton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Rose Pulley Brantley and the son of the late Luther Harris and Josephine Holt Brantley. An active farmer throughout his life, Mr. Brantley was a member of Wakefield Methodist Church and had previously been a member of Ivor United Methodist Church where he had served as a member of the Board of Trustees and the Board of Stewards, including chairman. He was elected to the board of directors of the Bank of Sussex and Surry in 1947, served 52 years until 1999, and during that time was vice president and a member of the Discount Committee. He was appointed to the Southampton County School Board in 1949, serving 33 years, including vice chairman and then chairman. He served on the board of directors and for some years as president of the Mutual Fire Insurance Corp. of Surry, Sussex and Southampton. He also served 15 years on the board of directors of the Community Electric Cooperative, including 10 years on the board of directors of the Virginia-Maryland-Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives, the board of directors of the Old Dominion Electric Cooperatives and the Virginia Peanut Growers' Association. Mr. Brantley is survived by two sons, Luther Ashby Brantley Jr. of Ivor and Aurelius Walter Brantley, M.D., and his wife, Betsy, of Franklin; grandchildren, Walter Brantley and Beth Brantley of Franklin, Joleen Grant of Indianapolis, Ind., and L.A. Brantley III of Ivor; and his very special friend, Louise B. Barker of Wakefield. He was predeceased by a son, Lawrence Pulley Brantley. A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in Wakefield United Methodist Church by the Rev. C. Randolph Duncan. Burial will be in Ivor Cemetery . The family will receive friends at the Franklin residence of Dr. and Mrs. Aurelius Brantley. Memorial donations may be made to the Ivor Volunteer Rescue Squad or Fire Department.
