Born in Nansemond County, he was the son of Barnes Wesley Brinkley and Kate Jones Brinkley. Mr. Brinkley was a lifelong mechanic and received his degree as a master mechanic from Kent State University in 1966. He was a member and former deacon of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Zuni, Va. Mr. Brinkley is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Hyla Joyner Brinkley; two sons, Joe T. Brinkley Jr. of Suffolk and James B. Brinkley and his wife, Susan, of Blowing Rock, N.C.; a brother, Lewis J. Brinkley of Suffolk; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Richard L. Brinkley; four sisters, Faye B. Baines, Ruby B. Mitchell, Rosa B. Williams and Margaret B. Overman; and three brothers, Leon M. Brinkley, R. Cecil Brinkley and Melvin J. Brinkley. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home, Suffolk, by the Rev. Douglas L. VanNiel of Bethany Presbyterian Church, Zuni. Burial will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Walters, Va. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home and other times at 304 Lake Drive, Suffolk.
