Obituary of Edward Harrington Brooks Jr EDWARD HARRINGTON BROOKS JR Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - January 26, 2004 Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - January 26, 2004 Edward Harrington Brooks Jr., 77, died Jan. 24, 2004, at Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin. A native and former mayor of the Town of Courtland, he was the son of the late Edward Harrington Brooks Sr. and Vivian Barrow Brooks. He served as president of the Courtland Ruritan Club, chairman of the board of Courtland United Methodist Church, trustee of Tidewater Virginia Development Council, local director of Dominion Bank, board member of Cypress Cove Country Club, and president of the Tri-County Chapter of the University of Virginia Alumni Association. Mr. Brooks served in the Naval Air Corps in World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was a graduate of the University of Virginia where he received a bachelors degree in business from the Universitys McIntire School of Commerce and was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. Upon graduation, Mr. Brooks returned to Courtland to enter the insurance business with his uncle, Wilbur J. Manry. The business was then known as L.L. Manry & Sons which later, through acquisitions, became known as Manry-Rawls Corp. Mr. Brooks served as president and was chairman of the board upon his retirement. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Dixon Brooks; a daughter, Elizabeth Brooks Jones and her husband, Thomas G. Jones IV of Franklin; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Brownrigg Jones and Thomas Chewning Jones; two sisters, Ellen Powell Brooks Blackwell of Newport News and Nancy Brooks Blevins of Chesapeake; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special cousin, Virginia Manry Daughtrey of Courtland. Mr. Brooks was predeceased by a son, Paul Harrington Brooks. A memorial service and reception will be held at noon Tuesday in Courtland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kay Barstow Gentry officiating. The interment will be private.
