Obituary of Winston Melville Browne WINSTON MELVILLE BROWNE Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Thursday, April 4, 2002 Winston Melville "Coach" Browne, 96, died April 3, 2002. Born in Bloxom, Va., he was a son of the late Charles Hill Browne and Sadie Chesser Browne and was the widower of Alma Watkinson Browne, to whom he was married for 69 years. Mr. Browne attended Hargrave Military Academy and VMI, and graduated from the University of Richmond with a BA in 1930. He played intercollegiate baseball where he won 29 of 31 games as a pitcher. Coach moved to Franklin in 1930 and taught history at Franklin High School and coached all sports from 1930 to 1937. He also served as assistant principal. From 1937 to 1970 Coach worked at Union Camp where he retired as supervisor of procurement in the Woodlands Division. He was a past member and chairman of the Southampton County School Board. He bred and raised beagles from 1922 to 1996 and raised 38 field trial champions. In 1979, he was inducted into the International Beagle Federation Hall of Fame, and served on the Advisory Committee of the American Kennel Club. Coach was a member of the Franklin Baptist Church over 65 years and was a member of the Brunner Bible Class. Survivors include a daughter, Alma B. O'Hara and husband David of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, Dr. Winston M. Browne and wife Beth of Boykins and Beverly W. Browne and wife Brownie of Dunwoody, Ga.; a brother, Elton J. Browne of Bloxom, Va.; six grandsons, Dr. Winston M. Browne III of Boykins, Dr. Bowman R. Browne of Suffolk, Judson S. Browne of Atlanta, Ga., David Melville Browne of DelRay Beach, Fla., Dr. Todd H. Robinson of Rome, Ga., and Scott K. Robinson of Atlanta, Ga.; six great-grandchildren, Winston M. Browne IV, B. Reed Browne Jr., M. Cole Browne, Jackson S. Browne, Parker Winston Robinson and Chandler E. Robinson. Coach Browne was predeceased by a sister, Jewel B. Barnes. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins, with the Rev. Dr. Ira D. Hudgins officiating.
