Obituary of George Russell Bryant GEORGE RUSSELL BRYANT Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Sunday, May 30, 2004 George Russell Bryant, 90, a devoted husband, father and brother, died May 29, 2004, at his residence. A native of Southampton County, he was a son of the late Mills Robert and Fannie Williams Bryant and the husband of 64 years of the late Olive Katherine Johnson Bryant. Mr. Bryant was a member of Courtland United Methodist Church, Master Mason with Courtland Lodge No. 85, receiving his 50-year pin in 1996, and was a Scottish Rite, 32nd Degree Mason. A veteran of World War II and Korea, he was retired from the U.S. Navy after 23 years as a chief metalsmith. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association No. 60, the VFW, and was retired from VDOT- Hampton Roads Tunnel Authority. An avid reader and gardener, who shared his abundance with others, he loved baseball and believed passionately in our democracy. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Kay Miller of Courtland ; two sons, Larry Bryant and wife, Pat of Montgomery, Ala., and James Bryant and wife, Sherry, of Courtland ; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Alice Johnson of Burlington, N.C.; five brothers, Wesley T. Bryant of Hampton, Allen G. Bryant of Portsmouth, William R. Bryant of Fort Pierce, Fla., Lloyd Bryant of Columbia, S.C., Melvin W. Bryant of Barhamsville, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bryant was predeceased by four brothers, Roland, Howard, M.R. and Clayton Bryant. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Courtland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kay Barstow Gentry officiating. Burial, with Masonic rites, will follow in Riverside Cemetery .
