Obituary of RICHARD ELMO CARTER The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA) - August 28, 1993 Richard Elmo "Pete" Carter, 72, loving and devoted husband, father and friend, of 31068 Country Club Road, died Aug. 27, 1993. Mr. Carter was a lifelong resident of Southampton County and was the son of the late William Richard and Lina Dundalow Carter. He retired in 1980 as paper mill superintendent of Union Camp Corp. after 42 years with the company. After his retirement, he served as a consultant for Niagara Wires of Quincy, Fla. Mr. Carter was a member of Hunterdale United Church of Christ, where he was a former deacon and trustee and served on numerous boards and committees over the years. He was a member of Franklin Masonic Lodge (NU)151, A.F. & A.M. Survivors include his wife, Mary Spivey Carter; two sons, Richard Emerson Carter and his wife, the former Janice Holt, of Charlottesville, and Robert Edward Carter of Franklin; two sisters, Grace C. Shearin of Smithfield and Helen C. Pope of Courtland; one brother, Ramon R. Carter of Indian Head, Md.; two grandchildren, Amy Frances Carter of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Richard Edward Carter of Charlottesville. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Hunterdale United Church of Christ by the Rev. James X. Camak. Burial with Masonic rites will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Friends may join the family at the residence. Wright Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the church building fund.
