Born Aug. 13, 1939, in Suffolk, Mr. Carter was a 37-year employee of Newport News Shipbuilding where he was a welding supervisor. He was a graduate of Suffolk High School, a former member of the Army National Guard and a former member of the Southampton Greys. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Bridges Carter; his daughter, Holly Carter Rountree and her husband, Brian, of Newsoms; his mother, Maybelle Ellis Carter of Suffolk; two sisters, Shirley Carter Eley and her husband, Willis, and Mabel Carter Wesner and her husband, Steve, all of Suffolk; one brother, Kenneth A. Carter of Pensacola, Fla.; two brothers-in-law, Hubert Bridges Jr. and his wife, Linda, and Glenn Bridges and his wife, Patsy, all of Franklin and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Robert D. Carter Sr., and a sister, Mary Blanche Carter. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home by the Rev. Dr. Alan Campbell. Burial will be at Southampton Memorial Park . The family will receive friends at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the residence, 744 Rebecca St. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Hospital Hospitality House, P.O.
