Obituary of Virgie Whitfield Carter VIRGIE W . CARTER Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Friday, May 19, 2000 Virgie Whitfield Carter , 89, a retired elementary teacher died May 16, 2000, in New Johnsonville, Tenn. Born Oct. 7, 1910, in Nansemond County, she was the daughter of the late Charles Junius and India Holland Whitfield and widow of John Henry Carter Sr. She was predeceased by her stepson, Glenn R. Carter ; her sister, Minnie Lou Turner; and granddaughter, Kelly Carter Comeau. In Suffolk, Mrs. Carter was a member of Holy Neck United Church of Christ, the Women's Bible Class, the Women's Fellowship and the Senior Friendly Fellowship. She was a member of the Holy Neck Homemaker's Club and the Holland Woman's Club. Mrs. Carter attended Farmville State Teacher's College and then taught school in Amelia County, Cradock, Portsmouth and Holland for a total of 44 years. After her retirement, she served as a substitute teacher in many of the area schools in Nansemond County. She dearly loved all the students that she taught over her many years of teaching. Survivors include her son and his wife, Wayne W . and Brenda J. Carter of New Johnsonville, Tenn.; granddaughter, Shannon Lynn Carter ; stepchildren, Mildred Jordan and her husband, Ritchie, of Suffolk, Dean M. Carter of Manteo, N.C., John Carter and his wife, Barbara, of Suffolk; eight stepgrandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday in Holy Neck United Church of Christ by the Rev. Scott Fuller with burial in Holland Cemetery. The family will receive friends in R. W . Baker & Co.
