Obituary of Herbert Godwin Cobb Jr. HERBERT GODWIN COBB JR. Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - January 18, 2000 Herbert Godwin Cobb Jr., a lifelong resident of Franklin, died Jan. 17, 2000, at East Pavilion Nursing Home. He was the son of the late Herbert Godwin Cobb and Gladys Hutchins Cobb. He was the loving stepson of the late Emma Cutchin Cobb. He was predeceased by a sister, Gladys Hutchins Cobb. Mr. Cobb was a graduate of the College of William and Mary, and he was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the Atlantic on the USS Bates and in the Pacific on the battleship USS New York. Upon returning to Franklin after his military service, he was employed by Camp Manufacturing Co. as a surveyor, and later he served as real estate assessor for the City of Franklin for 17 years. In 1993, he retired from his own business, Herbert Cobb Real Estate, where he was a broker and an appraiser. He was a member of the National Association of Realtors, and the Franklin/Southampton Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of Franklin Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school for many years. He was a member of the American Legion and the Sons of the Confederate Veterans. He was also a charter member and first president of the Franklin Jaycees. Mr. Cobb served as a Boy Scout leader on the staff of the Old Dominion Area Council, and for many years he managed the summer camp at Camp Waters on the James River near Surry. He was also an active member of the Franklin area Little Theater, both as an actor and/or director of several of the group's productions. Mr. Cobb is survived by several loving cousins as well as many devoted friends in the Franklin area. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Franklin Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Roy DeBrand and the Rev. Ira D. Hudgins officiating. Burial will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Franklin Baptist Church Chapel from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
