Obituary of James Essex Cogsdale JAMES ESSEX COGSDALE Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - June 6, 2004 James Essex Cogsdale, 79, retired Newsoms postmaster, died June 4, 2004, at Southampton Memorial Hospital. A lifelong resident of Newsoms , he was a son of the late Lee and Clarice Miles Cogsdale. Mr. Cogsdale joined the U.S. Maritime Service (Merchant Marines) in 1945 and then joined the U.S. Air Force where he served until 1948. He was a member of Newsoms Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, choir member and teacher of the Mens Bible Class. He was a past president and 50-year member of the Newsoms Ruritan Club and a past member of the Newsoms Masonic Lodge. Mr. Cogsdale was a former Newsoms town clerk. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Natalie Worrell Cogsdale; two daughters, Ercelle C. Vann and husband Andy of Newsoms and Lori J. Cogsdale of Raleigh, N.C.; a son, James Lee "Jim" Cogsdale and wife Lori of Newsoms ; a son-in-law, Ricky Gurganus and wife, Dora of Capron; two sisters, Letitia C. Crumpler of Sunbeam and Jackie C. Arrington of Courtland; his twin brother, Thomas N. Cogsdale of Sedley; seven grandchildren, Anrae G. Applewhite and husband Brandon, Adam Gurganus, Megan, Bethany and Zachary Vann and Claire and Jamie Cogsdale. Mr. Cogsdale was predeceased by a daughter, Kimberly C. Gurganus and two sisters, Mable C. Ellis and Josie C. Taylor. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Newsoms Baptist Church with the Rev. Curtis Faison, the Rev. Kenneth Williams and the Rev. Raymond Bunn officiating. Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery . The family will receive friends today from 3 to 5 p.m. at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, and suggest memorials be made to Newsoms Baptist Church, P.O. Box 312, Newsoms , VA 23874.
