Obituary of Ruth Johnson “Brownie” Collier RUTH JOHNSON COLLIER Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - July 6, 1997 Ruth Johnson ``Brownie'' Collier, 78, of Beaverbrook Manor died July 4, 1997, in Southampton Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Collier was born Feb. 28, 1919 to the late Joseph P. and Ruth Brown Collier and was a longtime resident of Franklin. She was predeceased by a brother, Shepherd Johnson and her daughter and son, Shepherd and Joe Collier. Mrs. Collier was employed early in life at both St. Regis and Camp Manufacturing Co. Later, she became an LPN and worked at Norfolk General Hospital as a nurse and a ward secretary. Following the death of her son, she returned to Franklin and was employed at Southampton Memorial Hospital until her retirement as a ward secretary. She was a charter member of the Jerusalem Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and one of the few granddaughters of the unit. Earlier in her life she was a troop leader for the Girl Scout Troop in Franklin. She is survived by a cousin, Jack Beaton of Hoover, Ala., and many loving friends. The graveside funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Poplar Spring Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Ira D. Hudgins. Visitation at Wright Funeral Home will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today.
