SUFFOLK May Belle Edwards Jakeman, 86, died Jan. 6, 1997.
A retired schoolteacher with 31 years of service, she taught in the elementary schools in Driver, Cypress, Whaleyville and also Chowan and Gates Counties, North Carolina. A native of Nansemond County, she was the widow of William W. Jakeman. She was a member of Whaleyville United Methodist Church and the fellowship class. United Methodist Women, former organist and member of the choir for many years. She was a member of Whaleyville Order of Eastern Star No. 135, where she was an organist for 31 years.
She was the daughter of the late John Ernest Edwards Sr. and Edna Parker Edwards.
Survivors include her daughter son-in-law, Mary Edna and Coleman Boyce of Suffolk; sister, Mildred E. Dougherty of Suffolk; brother, Rebert E. Edwards of Suffolk; and grandson, Brett Boyce of Suffolk.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Whaleyville United Methodist church by the Rev. Larry Renfrow and the Rev. Steve Siegrist. Interment with Eastern Star rites will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family in Hill Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to the Whaleyville United Methodsit Church or the Whaleyville Volunteer Fire Department.
