MARJORIE FELTS PITTMAN

Marjorie Felts Pittman, 80, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital in Suffolk. 

Born March 11, 1922, in Southampton County, she was the daughter of the late John Henry Felts and Ethel Worrell Felts of Berlin, a 1939 graduate of Ivor High School, and in 1943, earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at Farmville State Teacher's College (now Longwood University). She was the wife of the late Walter Cedric Pittman, who passed away in 1997, almost 50 years after their marriage in 1947. She began her teaching career at South Norfolk High School. In 1946 she began teaching at Courtland High School and retired from Southampton High School in 1976. Over her career, she taught civics, Latin and English. To this day, many of her students at Southampton High School still remember and appreciate the command of the English language that they developed in her classroom. Mrs. Pittman was a former member of Millfield Baptist Church and for the past 53 years had been a member of Courtland Baptist Church where she taught the Young People's Sunday School Class and was Bible School Superintendent for many years, was a member of the National Education Association, Virginia Education Association and Southampton County Historical Society. 

After retirement in the early 70s, she remained active in Courtland , her beloved home. Many good friends and neighbors brought her comfort and provided loving care, attention and companionship during several years of prolonged illness. She always appreciated the calls, visits, cards, food and other acts of kindness given by the community. 

Mrs. Pittman is survived by her sons, Dale W. Pittman and wife Linda of Petersburg, Va., and Henry F. Pittman and wife Mopsi of Chesapeake; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth White Pittman, John Travis Pittman, Linnea Dale Pittman, Matthew Walter Cedric Pittman, Timothy Wood Pittman, Andrew Graham Pittman and Austin Trevor Pittman. She was predeceased by her brothers, A. Meredith Felts and Robert Marvis Felts. 

A funeral will be at noon Thursday in Courtland Baptist Church, Courtland , with the Rev. Tommy Speight and the Rev. Mike Harrell officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery , Courtland . The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield. Memorial donations may be made to Millfield Baptist Church, 11225 Ivor Road, Ivor, VA 23866; Courtland Baptist Church, Courtland , VA 23837; or Courtland Volunteer Rescue Squad, Courtland , VA 23837.
