Myra Fendley Stewart, 86, died Aug. 29, 2001, in Courtland Healthcare after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was born in her family home Jan. 15, 1915 near Six Mile, S.C. She was the seventh of 13 children of William Wesley and Carrie Littleton Fendley. She loved the rolling mountain terrain of her childhood and her close-knit family. After graduation from Six Mile High School, she attended the nursing school of Six Mile Hospital. On Aug. 1, 1935 she married Joseph Taylor Stewart Sr. and until his death in 1998, enjoyed 63 years of marriage. The family relocated to Franklin in 1945. Myra was a member of Franklin Baptist Church, where for years she was active in many of its activities. After 30 years in the nursing profession, she retired to devote more time to her love of family, flowers, square dancing and gardening.
Survivors include her son retired USAF Col. Joseph T. Stewart Jr. and wife Yvonne; a daughter, Jacqueline Stewart Howell and husband, William H. Howell III; four grandchildren, William Stewart Howell and wife, Jackie, Susan Howell Suiter and husband, Ghi, Stephanie Yvonne Stewart and Laura Lynn Stewart; four great-grandchildren, Robert Colton Howell, Emily Arneta Suiter, Jackson Taylor Howell and Madison Bridgers Suiter; two brothers, Harold Fendley and Ray Fendley; and three sisters, Florence McClain of Anderson, S.C., Pauline Hopkins of Toccoa, Ga., and Ann Stewart of Simpsonville, S.C. Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by four brothers, John, Tom, Bill and Jesse Fendley and three sisters, Bessie Fendley, Josie Crimenger and Carrie Mae Alexander.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Franklin Baptist Church with the Rev. Sharon E. James and the Rev. Donald Dunlap officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her daughter.
