Obituary of Ernest Elbert Fletcher ERNEST E FLETCHER Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - February 1, 2004 Retired U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Ernest Elbert "Ernie" Fletcher, 69, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004. He was born Oct. 18, 1934, in Bartley, W.Va., a son of the late Oscar Whitten and Rosa Young Fletcher, and was reared in Buchanan County, Va., and Rockville Centre, N.Y. He enlisted in the Marines in 1952, rising through the ranks and retiring as a captain after proudly serving his country for 28 years active duty and two years in the Fleet Marine Corps Reserves. He was a decorated veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. During his military career, he worked as an aircraft electrician and later served in the counterintelligence field. He was then em- ployed as the security coordinator for Union Camp Corporation, retiring after 16 years. He was a proud member of the Marine Corps Counterintelligence Association, U.S. Marine Corps Vietnam Helicopter As- sociation, and a charter member of the Franklin chapter of the Marine Corps League, Long Trang Detachment. Ernie is survived and will be missed by his wife, Carolyn Gillette Fletcher; two daughters, CTM1 (SW/AW) Tammy J. Fletcher, U. S. Navy, of Norfolk and Sharon F. Pitts of Newsoms, Va.; a son, Tommy R. Fletcher of Capron, Va.; four older sisters, Edith Kirk and husband Paul of Bristol, Pa., Marie Beekman and Ona Mae Coombs, both of Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y., Margie Tester and husband Edmund of Medford, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Amanda L. Fletcher and Matthew L. Pitts; four nieces and eight nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Ernest E. Fletcher Jr. and a brother, Victor V. Fletcher. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Wright Funeral Home. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Poplar Spring Cemetery .
