SUFFOLK - Marion Skeath Friend, 79, of the 800 block of Riverview Drive, passed away Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002.
A native of Philadelphia, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Rev. Dr. William Charles and Marie Hoffman Skeath. Mrs. Friend was a graduate of Friends Select School of Philadelphia, Wellesley College, and the College of William and Mary. She retired as director of instruction at the Nansemond Suffolk Academy.
Mrs. Friend was the former owner of the Yarn Barn and a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, where she was the past president of the United Methodist Church, where she was the past president of the United Methodist Women and was a former choir member. She was a member of the Tuesday Afternoon Book Club, the Suffolk Social Club, Suffolk Art League, Riddick's Folly Historical Society, and an honorary member of Phi Kappa Gamma. Mrs. Friend was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels.
Survivors include her husband, Edwin Abell Friend Jr.; her daughters, Patricia Conrad of Suffolk, Marianna Friend of Harpersfield, Ohio; and her son, Edwin A. Friend III of Suffolk.
Private interment will be at 1:30 p.m., and the memorial service conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Main Street United Methodist Church by the Rev. Bob Parks. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Main Street United Methodist, 202 N. Main Street, Suffolk, Va. 23434, or to the Nansemond Suffolk Academy Scholarship Fund, 3373 Pruden Blvd., Suffolk, Va. 23434. R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
