Obituary of Robert Whitfield Gale ROBERT WHITFIELD GALE Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Sunday, December 23, 2001 Robert W. Gale SMITHFIELD - Robert Whitfield ''Bob'' Gale, 79, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at Riverside Regional Medical Center. He was born at the family farm in Isle of Wight County and was a lifelong resident of Isle of Wight and Smithfield. He was a member and past deacon of the Smithfield Baptist Church. With his brother he founded and operated Gale Company, a furniture and appliance retailer in Smithfield, for 35 years and also managed the family farm for a period of years after the death of his parents, Edith Lane Gale and Joseph B. Gale in 1972. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Charlotte Hutter Gale; and three sons, Robert Hutter Gale and wife Alison of Smithfield, Judge Joseph Harold Gale of Washington, D.C., and Charles Whitfield Gale and wife Nancy of Smithfield; grandson, Brian Hutter Gale; a brother, Joseph Bronson Gale and wife Mary; sister, E. Lane Gale Beale and husband Carl, all of Smithfield; and several nieces and nephews. Bob was a World War II veteran, serving in the Pacific for three years with the Army Corps of Engineers. He served on the Smithfield Town Council, and was a founder of the Smithfield Swim Club, a past president of the Smithfield Jaycees and a past president of the Smithfield German Club. He was an avid boatsman and fisherman. Services will be held at Smithfield Baptist Church at 2 p.m. today. Interment will follow at Mill Swamp Baptist Church cemetery.
