SUFFOLK - Rachel Gardner Harrell, 71, of the 500 block of Chappel Drive, died Oct. 3, 2001 in Orlando, Fla., while visiting her daughter, son-in-law and family.
A native of Isle of Wight county, she was the daughter of the late Cephus Luke Gardner Sr., and Mary Jane Joyner Gardner. She was also predeceased by her husband, Gilmer Hudson Harrell; a son, Gilmer Harrell Jr.; a sister, Ida G. Odom; and a brother, John Gardner. She was a member of Bethlehem Christian Church, Mary Sue Brittle Sunday School Class, Molly Savage Circle, past member of the Staley Circle, and past deaconess. She was also a member of the Bethlehem Ruritan Club, Bethlehem Fellowship Club, and active in delivering Meals on Wheels. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Marion H. and Thomas McCue of Orlando, Fla., Joyce H. and Benjie Copeland of Windsor, Elizabeth H. Sanchez of Suffolk and Terese H. and Russell Neblett of Suffolk; son and daughter-in-law, J.C. and Angel Harrell of Suffolk; grandchildren Tommy McCue, Sherry Worth, Matthew McCue, April Griffith, Jason Copeland, Brittany Copeland, J.P. Sanchez, Jeremy Neblett, Jessica Neblett, Nathan Neblett, Tyler Harrell, Travis Harrell and Madison Harrell; great-grandchildren Kimberly, Hannah, Kayla Worth; sisters Mary Hawes of Alfred Station, N.Y., Amy Tucker of Lakeland, Fla., Bernice Holland of Portsmouth, and Brenda Dilday of Ahoskie, N.C.; and a brother, Cephus Luke Gardner, Jr. of Suffolk.
A funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Bethlehem Christian Church by the Rev. Jonathan Palmer with burial in Holly Lawn Cemetery. Friends may join the family today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Harrell and Hill Funeral Home, 2460 Pruden Blvd., Suffolk, and other times at the residence.
