MARGARET GARWOOD CUTCHINS

   AUBURN, ALA.  Margaret Garwood Cutchins, 68, wife of Dr. Macolm A. Cutchins and a former resident of Franklin, died March 20 at her home.
   Mrs. Cutchins was a longtime second grade and preschool teacher at Lee Scott Academy and also taught at Reeves Kiddie Academy and Trinity Christian School. An accomplished poet whose work won numerous awards both in Alabama and on a national level, Mrs. Cutchins was instrumental in establishing the literary magazine Smoke Signals at Lee Scott Academy and published a book of poems, Ladders We Climb to Who We Are.
   She served as president of the Alabama State Poetry Society (ASPS) from 1995 to 96 and recently chaired a state-wide ASPS poetry contest. She was active in the Alabama Writers Conclave, winning their Poetry Workshop Award in 1998.
   She was a founding member of Sav-A-Life. Mrs. Cutchins was a member of the covenant Presbyterian Church where she regularly arranged flowers for worship and at one time sang solos. Margaret will be remembered  as a master teacher who understood and loved children instilling in them the wonder and joy of learning.
      Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Leigh Ann Pierce and husband, Jerry Pierce Jr. of Scottswood, Ala.; two sons, Malcolm A. Cutchins Jr. and wife Pat of North Bend, Wash., and Kelly Cutchins and wife Lynn of Dallas, Texas; a sister Betty Garwood Clayton Jr., and husband Sonny of Crozet, Va., two brothers, Arthur Garwood and wife Margaret Ellen of Grants Pass, Ore., and James Garwood and wife Kay of Middleburg, Va.; six grandchildren, Benjamin, Daniel, Samuel and Thomas Pierce, Courtney and Clint Cutchins.
   A funeral was conducted March 22 in Covenant Presbyterian Church, Auburn. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin, March 24. Wright Funeral Home, Franklin was in charge of local arrangements.
