Born Jan. 14, 1937, in Franklin, she was the only child of the late Leland and Bernice Umphlette Story. Shirley, who was the office manager for the State Farm Insurance Agency in Franklin for 36 years, was past president of the American Legion Auxiliary, past president of the Franklin Jaycettes and former Sunday school teacher for Hunterdale United Church of Christ. She was a member of High Street United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Russell S. Gayle Jr.; a daughter, Robin Gayle Rudd, and her husband, Robin, of Graham, N.C.; two sons, Mike Gayle and his wife, Karen, of Franklin, and Troy Gayle and his wife, Kristine, of Seville, Ohio; three grandchildren, Kristin Rudd, Jordan Gayle, Russell C. Gayle; four step-grandchildren, Kevin, Jennifer, Ashton and Krystal, all of Franklin; a special first cousin, William J. Umphlette of Franklin; and a special aunt, Cora McClenny of Chester, Va. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Poplar Spring Cemetery with the Rev. Edward C. Johnson officiating.
