FRANKLIN - Iona Joyner Gayle Gilliam, 95, formerly of Smithfield, died Sept. 6, 2002 at Courtland Healthcare. Born in Southampton County, she was one of thirteen children of the late William and Effie Cobb Joyner, and the widow of Richard Gregory Gilliam. She was a member of the Franklin Congregational Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors include four sons, W. Talmadge Gayle and wife, Lois, Charles R. Gayle and wife, Margaret, Wesley C. Gayle and wife, Agnes, all of Franklin, and E.B. Gayle Jr. of Sedley; a sister, Hattie Joyner Dailey of Suffolk; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Gilliam was predeceased by her first husband, Elezer Benjamin Gayle.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. James Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Spring Cemetery . The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and requests memorials be made to Franklin Congregational Church, 412 N. High St., Franklin, VA 23851.
