Mrs. Bessie Powell Gray, 83, of 716 Bolling St., died Oct. 23, 1993, at her residence. 

Mrs. Gray was born in Edgerton, Va., and was the daughter of the late Johnny B. and Mattie Newton Powell. She was a member of Franklin Congregational Christian Church. 

Survivors include her husband, Vernie A. Gray Sr.; two daughters, Jean G. Leggett of Suffolk and Joy Gray of Nashua, N.H.; two sons, Vernie A. Gray Jr. of Sunbeam, Va., and Mitchel P. Gray of Franklin; a sister, Buelah P. Dunderdale of Virginia Beach; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. 

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Wright Funeral Home by the Rev. L.T. Wilkins. Burial will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Friends may join the family at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. 

Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity.
