JOYCE MELBA GRAY HARRELL

Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Thursday, June 12, 1997

Joyce Gray Harrell, 63, a retired court reporter for the Fifth Judicial Circuit, died June 11, 1997. 
A native of Southampton County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Hugh and Bettie Whitley Gray and a graduate of Newsoms High School. She attended Norfolk Business College, John Taylor's Art School and completed the Virginia Master Gardener's Course. Mrs. Harrell was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, where she served on the administrative board, sang in the adult choir and was a member of the UMW Circle No. 4. She was a former president and member of the Riverview Garden Club and member of the Suffolk Nansemond Historical Society and Suffolk Art League. 
Survivors include her husband, Edward R. ''Billy'' Harrell; daughter, Pamela Askew; her sons, Glenn E. Harrell and Joseph Trent Harrell, all of Suffolk; her sisters, Merlen Lassiter of Suffolk, Jacquelyn Clary of Boykins, Bettie Culverhouse of Virginia Beach; her brother, Hugh Gray of Virginia Beach; eight grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. 
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Main Street United Methodist Church by Dr. Alan R. Felumlee. Burial will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends in R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home today from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 902 Pennsylvania Ave., Suffolk, Va. 23434 or to the Memorial Fund of Main Street United Methodist Church, 202 N. Main St., Suffolk, Va. 23434.
