FRANKLIN Lina Gray Harcum, 84, a lifelong resident of Southampton County, died Nov. 9, 2000. She was a daughter of the late C.A. and Clara Johnson Gray and the widow of Jessie Billy Harcum. Mrs. Harcum was the retired owner and operator of Checkerboard Corner Store and was an amateur archeologist interested in Indian archeology. She was known for her polished rocks and jewelry.
Survivors include two daughters, Adeline H. Tillett and her husband Larry, and Rebecca H. Butler and her husband, John, and a son, John Alan Harcum and his wife Dottie, all of Franklin; a sister Virginia Gray Savage of Levitown, N.Y.; eight grandchildren, Michael Tillett, Mark Tillett, Jason Tillett, Tommy Butler, Ricky Butler, Cathy Butler, Cindy H. Felts and Charlie Harcum; five great-grandchildren, Megan Tillett, Maranda Tillett, Shelby Felts, Scott Felts and Billy Cones. She was predeceased by a grandson, Kenny Butler. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Sycamore Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Reginal Warren officiating. Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Sycamore Baptist Church, 31120 Sycamore Baptist Church Road, Franklin, VA 23851 or Tucker Swamp Baptist Church, 37527 Seacock Chapel Road, Zuni, Va. 23898 or a favorite charity. Wright Funeral Home is in charge.
