Obituary of EVA MERLE CHAPPELL HILL EVA MERLE CHAPPELL HILL Virginian Pilot - 06-28-2005 SMITHFIELD - "Eva Roy" Merle Hill, 86, formerly of Smithfield, passed away June 26, 2005, at home. She was a native of Hertford, N.C., but lived in the area since 1956. She was a member of Battery park Baptist Church, the Ruth Walden Circle, a Christian women's community service group, and was known as "Everybody's Avon Lady" for many years. Her husband of 51 years, James H. Hill; a brother, McElroy Chappell; and a sister, Marie Jordan, preceded Eva Roy in death. A beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, left to cherish her memory is her son, Jim Hill and his wife Cheryl of Smithfield; three daughters, Janet Gwaltney and her husband Vernon of Chester, Jean Scott of Powhatan, Va. and Joyce Butler and her husband Herbert of Gloucester; eight grandchildren, James Lee Gwaltney, Katherine Elaine Hill, Kevin P. Gwaltney, Kenneth James Hill, Michelle Hill Allen, Samuel B. Scott III, Mary B. Scott and mark Hopkins; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Flora Bunch of Hertford, N.C. A funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Randy Green officiating. Burial will follow in Whitehead's Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
