Obituary of Garth Stuart Hancock Sr. GARTH STUART HANCOCK SR. Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - June 10, 2002 FRANKLIN - Garth Stuart Hancock Sr., a retired peanut industrialist, died suddenly June 9, 2002. He was born in Suffolk on April 19, 1921 to the late Mary Ernie Johnson and Robert Lafayette Hancock Jr. Following his high school education in Courtland, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, he and his brothers joined their father in the establishment of Hancock Peanut Company in Courtland. He was well respected by his peers in the industry. Garth was a life-long member and trustee of Courtland Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men's Bible Class and the Men's Fellowship group. He was a member of Manry Hunt Club and past president of Courtland Ruritan Club. Affectionately known as "Papa," Garth was a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He was well known and well loved. Although he, like others of "The Greatest Generation" was not always demonstrative with his affection, he had a deep and abiding love of his family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Oneta Flowers Hancock; four daughters, June H. Gladding of Fairfax, Va., Martha H. Hallowes and her husband, Bill, of Jacksonville, Fla., Susan H. Duke and her husband, Roy, and Jo Anne H. Blair, all of Franklin; a son, Garth S. Hancock Jr. and his wife, Elisa, of Woodbridge, Va.; two step-children, Henry E. "Hank" Wethington Jr. of Franklin and Patricia W. Dorn and her husband, Ralph, of Chesapeake; two sisters, Lucille H. Dilday of Knoxville, Tenn. and Jackie H. Shearin of Courtland; 12 grandchildren, Anne G. Scroggs, Elizabeth G. Hanes, Travis Fuller, Eric Fuller, Sarah H. Poole, Garth Stuart Hancock, III, Ryan Duke, Scott Duke, Candace Duck, Jennifer Wethington, Scott Thomason and Sara Thomason; four great-grandchildren, Jacob Fuller, Daniel Hanes, Zachery Scales and Brandan Graham. He was predeceased by his first wife, Josephine Hedgepeth Hancock; two brothers, Robert L. "Bob" Hancock III and Harry Lee Hancock. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Courtland Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Speight officiating. Burial will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery .
