Obituary of Jay Franklin Hassett JAY F. HASSETT Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - April 21, 1999 Jay Franklin Hassett, 82, of Hunterdale Road, died April 19, 1999, in the East Pavilion. Mr. Hassett, born in Staunton, Va., a son of the late Louis and Yetta Friedman Hassett, was reared in Petersburg and resided in Franklin for 60 years. He served as an Army aviator during World War II and was retired from Hassett's Department Store which he owned with his three brothers, Abe, Sam and Harry. He was a member of Franklin Baptist Church, a member and past president of the Franklin Kiwanis Club and a former Boy Scout volunteer. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Fannie Vaughan Hassett; four daughters, Joan Hassett of Franklin, Marilyn Wilson and her husband, Bob, of Richmond, Kim Slagle and her husband, Dr. Jay Slagle, and Susan Carlton and her husband, Dr. Jonathon Carlton, all of Colonial Heights; a son, Dr. Raymond Hassett of Rocky Mount, N.C.; a brother, Harry Hassett of Franklin; eight grandchildren, Troy Pollard, Sherry Pollard, Steve Pollard, Pamela Pollard, Blair Slagle, Travis Wilson, Daniel Wilson and Alexandria Grace Carlton. He was predeceased by two brothers, Sam and Abe Hassett. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home. Burial will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
