Obituary of James Everette "Jim" Henry JAMES EVERETT HENRY Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - July 10, 2002 James Everette "Jim" Henry died July 8, 2002. He was born Dec. 6, 1910 in Henrico County to the late Hugh B. and Caroline Humphries Henry. He was a professional engineer and land surveyor and was an engineer with the Virginia Department of Highways for 43 years and, at retirement, a Suffolk District Survey Engineer. A graduate of the University of Richmond, he was an outstanding football and track athlete and an all-conference fullback his sophomore year. He was an Army veteran of World War II where he served as an officer with the Aviation Engineers in the European Theatre. Mr. Henry was a past president and former member of the State Board of Architects, Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors; former vice mayor for the City of Franklin; past member of the Franklin City Council; 13-year member of the Franklin Planning Commission and appointed to serve on the Franklin Real Estate Evaluation Board in 1988. He was first chairman and past member of the Franklin City School Board and past member of the Southampton County School Board. In addition, he was a former member and past president of the Franklin Lions Club and a member of the Lee-Jackson chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Military Order of the Stars and Bars. His maternal grandfather, Capt. John Robert Powell Humphries, was an aide to Gen. Stonewall Jackson and was the first man at his side the night he was fatally wounded. He was a member of Cypress Cove Country Club, American Society of Military Engineers, Virginia Professional Engineers and Virginia Association of Surveyors. Mr. Henry was a member of High Street United Methodist Church where he served several terms on the Board of Stewards, a term on the Board of Trustees and was past president of the Maxey Bible Class. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Alma Bell Henry; a son, James Everette Henry Jr. of Vienna; a daughter, Corinne Henry Barkdull of Richmond; two sisters, Lillian Henry Lawrence and Viola Henry Reynolds, both of Richmond; a brother, H.B. Henry of Georgia; six grandchildren, Trip Hill, Cori Hill Fitzgerald, Sarah Hill and J.P. Henry, all of Richmond, Susie Henry and Jonathan Henry of Vienna; and a great-granddaughter, Olive Lane Hill. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Linda Alvis officiating. Burial will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery . The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to either High Street UMC, P.O.
