Born in Lee Hall, Va., on Nov. 5, 1935, she was a daughter of the late Robert L. Lanahan Sr. and Annie Bell Ransom Lanahan. Betty was a retired federal civil service employee and a childcare provider. She was a member of Hunterdale United Church of Christ. Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Buck J. Hicks; three daughters, Mary H. Johnson of Franklin, Janet H. Goode of Palmyra, Va., and Carol H. Griffin of Newsoms; two sisters, Annabelle Lanahan of Tabb, Va., and Jeanne L. Leonard and her husband, Robert, of Newport News; four grandchildren, Jason D. Gueua, Lauren E. Goode, Virginia L. Goode and Robert S. Goode. She was predeceased by two brothers, Robert L. Lanahan Jr. and James R. Lanahan. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Hunterdale United Church of Christ by the Rev. Dr. Alan Campbell. Burial will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery.
