Mr. Howerton was born in Brunswick County. He was a retired comptroller for Union Camp Corp. and a member of High Street United Methodist Church and Hunterdale Ruritan Club. He was past chairman of Franklin Community Fund and Franklin Redevelopment and Housing Authority. He was past president of the Lions Club and a past member of Franklin Masonic Lodge 151. He was secretary and treasurer of Cypress Cove Country Club. Survivors include his wife, Louise Barham Howerton; a daughter, Peggy H. Wimberley of Greenville, S.C.; two sisters, Louise T. Howerton of Clayton, Ga., and Emily Howerton of Alexandria; and two grandchildren. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Poplar Spring Cemetery by the Rev. W. David Erickson.
