He was an Army veteran of World War II and retired after 30 years of service in the sawmill of Union Camp Corp. He was a member, former deacon and Sunday School director and former church secretary of Beaver Dam Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Libby Burgess Jernigan; a daughter, Vivian Britton of Windsor, Va.; a son, Joseph Jernigan of Sedley; five grandchildren, C.W. Britton Jr., Mary Leigh Britton, Amy Jernigan, Bryan Jernigan and Christopher Jernigan; and a niece, Henrietta Jenkins of Kinston, N.C. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Beaver Dam Baptist Church by Dr. Richard L. Peerey. Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery.
