Obituary of John Robert Johnson JOHN ROBERT JOHNSON Virginian Pilot  12-24-2003 SUFFOLK  Former postmaster of Suffolk, John Robert Johnson, died Dec. 22, 2003. He was a resident of Chambrel of Williamsburg, Va., for the last three years. His parents, Mary Daughtrey and John Sankey Johnson, brother, C. Maynard Johnson and sister, Frances J. Clark preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jacqueline B. Johnson of Williamsburg; three daughters, Roberta J. Racioppi, Jacqueline J. Barbour and Constance J. Peay, all who reside in West Point, Va.; four grandchildren; and a sister Dorothy J. Watson of Columbia, S.C. John Robert was born April 30, 1912 and resided in Suffolk for more than 80 years before moving to Williamsburg. During that time, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service from 1920 until his retirement in 1970. He became assistant postmaster in 1950 and from 1961 to 1970 he served as postmaster. He served in many capacities in civic and social organizations, was a member of the American Legion Post No. 57, West End Baptist Church and became a life member of the Lions Club in 1988. The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry H. Odom, 512 Dumville Ave., Suffolk, from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday. A funeral will conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in West End Baptist Church by the Rev. T. Floyd Irby with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suffolk. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to West End Baptist Church organ fund or to Nansemond Suffolk Rescue Squad. R.W.
