NEWSOMS - Mary Helen Johnson Porter, 84, a lifelong resident of Newsoms , died April 7, 2001. 

She was born in Southampton County, a daughter of the late Samuel Hugh and Nannie Carter Johnson, and was the widow of Harvey J. Porter Sr. She was a 1937 graduate of Boykins High School. An accomplished cook, homemaker and seamstress, she dedicated her life to caring for other people. Mary Helen, ``Grandma'' to all who knew her, was a member of Newsoms Baptist Church where she was a nursery teacher for more than 20 years, a member of the Golden Age Club and the Kate Story Circle. She was an avid gardener. 

Survivors include a daughter, Patsy P. Fowler and her husband Bill of Newsoms ; five sons, Harvey J. Porter Jr. and his wife Carolyn of Newsoms , Kenny Porter and his wife Faye of Courtland, Donnie Porter and his wife Linda of Newsoms , Barry Porter and his wife Kay of Clifton, Va. and Danny Porter and his wife Ann of Franklin; a sister, Nell Ferguson of Franklin; 10 grandchildren, Sheri Dodson, Harvey J. Porter III, Christy Brown, Brian Porter, Amy Vick, Kevin Porter, Dee Dee Magette, Anna Porter, Tara Fowler and Donnie Porter II; and six great-grandchildren, Kimberly and Lee Dodson, Jacob and Joshua Porter, Jordan Brown and Taylor Porter. 

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Newsoms Baptist Church with the Rev. Curtis Faison officiating. Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery , Newsoms . The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, and suggest that memorials be made to Newsoms Baptist Church, P.O. Box 312, Newsoms , VA 23874.
