Helen Kathryn Johnson, 96, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at the East Pavilion.
A native of Franklin, she was a daughter of the late Albert S. and Elma Whitfield Johnson. She was a graduate of Franklin High School, attended Hollins College and was a graduate of the College of William and Mary. Miss Johnson was a former teacher in Hampton and White Sulfur Springs , W.Va., and retired from NASA after 35 years of service. A longtime resident of Hampton, she attended St. John's Episcopal Church and was a "Pink Lady" at Hampton General Hospital. She was a member of Franklin Baptist Church.
Survivors include five nieces, Ross Johnson Francis, Kathryn Johnson McKinney, Leigh Conwell Croteau, Frances Conwell Stepp, Laura Johnson Atherton; and a nephew, Leigh Whitfield Johnson Jr.; five great-nieces; and three great-nephews. Miss Johnson was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Johnson Conwell and two brothers, Ashley Shelbourne Johnson and Leigh Whitfield Johnson.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Emmanuel Episcopal Church with the Rev. Edmund Pickup Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Spring Cemetery . Memorials may be made to The Village at Wood's Edge, 1401 N. High St., Franklin, VA 23851. Wright Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
