Obituary of Leslie Carroll Johnston Jr. LESLIE CARROLL JOHNSTON JR The Tidewater News - 05-12-2005 BURLINGTON, N.C. - Leslie Carroll Johnston Jr., 68, of the 1500 block of Elmdale Road, died May 9 at the Hospice and Palliative care Home of Burington [North Carolina] after 15 months of declining health. A native of Holland, he was married for 47 years to Mary Anne Thomas Johnston. He was the son of the late Leslie Carroll Johnston Sr. and Olive Thweatt Johnston. He was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church and the church choir. He was an active member of the Whitsett Ruritan Club, where he served as president and treasurer. An avid golfer, Mr. Johnston worked and played at Stoney Creek Gold course with his many friends. He was a graduate of Elon University, where he was captain of the men's tennis team and a supporter of Elon University athletics. He also served on the Elon National Alumni Executive Board. Mr. Johnston retired from banking as executive vice president with First Citizens Bank and Trust in Gibsonville. Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife of the home; his mother of Twin Lakes Center, Burlington; three daughters, Elizabeth "Beth" Coulter and husband Ronald of Durham, N.C., Kimberly Beaman and husband Joe of Cary, N.C., and Lisa Smithdeal and husband Cary of Raleigh, N.C.; five grandchildren, Bradley and Alex Coulter, Parker and Mary Joe Beaman and Hillary Smithdeal. A memorial service was conducted at Front Street United Methodist Church May 12, by Dr. H. Sidney Huggins III and the Rev. Robert Simpson. The family will receive friends at the residence.
