Obituary of Charles Thomas Jones CHARLES THOMAS JONES Virginian Pilot - 03-10-2005 SUFFOLK - Charles Thomas Jones, 67, passed away March 8, 2005, at Obici Memorial Hospital, after a long-tern illness. Tom loved life and lived it to the fullest; he fought the good fight courageously and is an inspiration to his family and loved ones. Tom was born June 23, 1937, in Lecompte, La., to the late Minor H. and Opal S. Jones. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Gloria "Jeanie" Cofield Jones; his daughter, Deborah Cheryl Jones and her partner Tim Shelby of Monterey, Calif.; his son Charles Thomas Jones II and his wife Elise and son, Nic of Newport News; his brother, Robert Wayne Jones and his wife Betty of Lecompte, La.; his sister, Sandy Smith of Oregon; Jeanie's mon, Ellen Jernigan Francis of Suffolk; Jeanie's four sisters, Judith Rhodes of Sandston, Va., Donna Barnes of Suffolk, Anne Cofield of Alexandria, Va., and Mary Anderson of Suffolk; nieces, nephews and many good friends. Tom was an extraordinary man. Before his retirement from the United States Navy, he earned a world diving record in Antarctica, served two tours of duty in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart twice. After Navy retirement, he continued to serve others by earning a degree as a registered nurse. Tom was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lecompte. He never met anyone he didn't like. He was a sportsman, diver, pilot, musician, writer, loved to cook and he especially enjoyed fishing with Uncle Doyle. The family will receive friends today at the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and other times at 4701 O'Kelly Drive.
