Obituary of Mary Helen Nance Joyner MARY HELEN NANCE JOYNER Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Sunday, October 4, 1998 Mary Helen Nance Joyner, 90, died in Richmond on Oct. 2, 1998. Born in Henry County, Va., she was a daughter of the late William Rorer and Janie Gravely Nance and the widow of Marion Ryvers Joyner. Mrs. Joyner attended Radford College and the College of William and Mary. After her marriage in 1929, she lived most of her adult life in Southampton County where she participated in many civic activities and was an active leader in the Courtland United Methodist Church. Mrs. Joyner taught school for over 40 years and made many contributions to the field of education on both the local and state levels. Survivors include a daughter, Gladys Joyner Wright of Warsaw, Va.; a son, Marion Ryvers Joyner Jr. of Richmond; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces. She was predeceased by a sister, Gladys Nance Saunders, formerly of Chatham, Va. A graveside service will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Monday in Riverside Cemetery by the Rev. Robert J. Parks.
