Mr. Kirkland was a lifelong resident of Southampton County and was the son of the late James Henry and Lillie Chitty Kirkland. He had retired after 41 years of service as a machine operator at Union Camp Corp. and was a member of UPIU Local No. 1488 and Sycamore Baptist Church. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Doris Daughtrey Kirkland; his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy K. and Robert E. Lee; his son, James Cary Kirkland; three sisters, Lizzie K. Terry, Blanche Rose Kirkland of Norfolk, Gladys K. Starke of Ashburn, Va.; a brother, Paul H. Kirkland of Capron. He was predeceased by a sister, Mabel K. Drake, and a brother, Ruben W. Kirkland. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Wright Funeral Home by the Rev. Darden B. Battle, the Rev. Dr. Reginald Warren and the Rev. Edward Johnson. Burial will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery.
