Obituary of John B. Mapes Jr. JOHN B. MAPES JR. Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - December 1, 2000 Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. John B. Mapes Jr., 65, died Nov. 30, 2000, in Southampton Memorial Hospital. Born in Endicott, N.Y., he was a son of the late John B. and Sophia Menges Mapes. Mr. Mapes was a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute and received his master's degree from VPI. An Army veteran, he served two tours in Korea and one tour in Vietnam and retired from Union Camp Corp. where he was a pulp mill assistant supervisor. He was a member of Franklin Presbyterian Church and Peninsula Bridge Club Unit 110, Newport News. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Jackie E. Mapes; a daughter, Joanne J. Turner; a son, Mark A. Mapes, both of Franklin; a sister, Jeanne Rode of Jersey Shore, Pa.; and three grandsons, Ryan, Logan and Austyn Turner. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Franklin Presbyterian Church by the Rev. James Lambeth. Burial, with military honors, will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence, 159 Beechwood Drive, and suggests that in lieu of flowers, remembrances be given to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 2101 Executive Drive, Tower Box 21, Hampton, VA 23666 or the American Cancer Society, c/o Ruth Petty, 116 Southampton Road, Franklin, VA 23851.
