Joseph Hunter Nelms, 54, of the 1000 block of Magruder Road, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, in his residence. 

He was a native of Isle of Wight County and a retired automobile salesman affiliated with Kello Motor Company. Mr. Nelms was a member of Smithfield Baptist Church and a U.S. Air Force Veteran. 

Survivors include a daughter, Tracey N. Lindsay and her husband, Darrin, of Carrollton; a son, Sean Hunter Nelms and his wife, Sandy, of Andrews Air Force Base; a brother, Joseph Eugene Nelms Jr. of Smithfield; and a granddaughter, Holly Christine Nelms. 

A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in Smithfield Assembly of God Church by the Rev. Donald Watkins. Burial will follow in Southampton Memorial Park , Franklin. The family suggests contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Peninsula Chapter, in memory of Joseph Hunter Nelms, P.O. Box 863, Newport News, Va. 23607 or Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 97, Smithfield, Va. 23431-0097. Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, is handling arrangements.
