Obituary of Richard Lee Piland RICHARD LEE PILAND Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - December 21, 1997 Richard Lee ``Richie'' Piland, 25, a resident of Cut Thru Road died Friday, Dec. 19, 1997, in Chesapeake. A young man who always tried to lend a helping hand to those in need, Richie was struck by a passing car and died while assisting a distressed motorist on W. Military Highway, Chesapeake. A 1990 graduate of Windsor High School, he was employed in computer system quality control for Lillian Vernon, Virginia Beach. He was also attending ITT Technical Institute, Norfolk. Richie was a large man, but his friends and family knew that he was a ``gentle giant.'' He was a dedicated member of Bethany Presbyterian Church, Zuni, and had strong interests in computer science, swimming and was an avid pool player. He was an active member of the American Pool Players Association and had formerly worked at Deb's Road House in Ivor. He is survived by his parents, William Q. and Carolyn Hedgepeth Piland; a brother, Alan Eric Piland, all of Zuni, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Burlee and Ida Addison Hedgepeth and Richard Roland and Flossie Smith Piland. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Bethany Presbyterian Church by the Rev. John P. Hartman. Burial will be in Windsor Cemetery . The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, and at other times at the residence, 8420 Cut Thru Road, Zuni.
